The VW Golf Variant Looks Just Like Expected in New Spy Photos

It is almost ready for production.

It’s not surprising that any new Volkswagen Golf design is so traditional. The Wolfsburg-based company has a global bestseller and it’s safe for us to assume the upcoming Golf Variant will not be a significant change. The latest spy photos confirms that the car was revealed almost three months before its official debut.

These prototypes were seen testing on German public roads wearing very little camouflage. It is obvious that the front end of the Golf 8 hatchback is not secret. The taillights are covered in tape at the back. Everything else appears to be in final production.
The Golf Variant, while not the most anticipated model of the year is a significant addition to Volkswagen’s European portfolio. Despite the crossover and SUV boom, the Old Continent still needs practical wagons. The new Golf Variant will be a direct competitor to the wagon versions of the Ford Focus , Skoda Octavia and SEAT Leon.

The Golf Variant will share its engine lineup with the Golf hatchback. This means that there will be a wide range of gasoline, diesel and electrified powertrains. We don’t know yet if there will be a new Golf R Variant or another Golf GTD Variant. However, we expect the two performance variants to join the lineup later in the model’s lifespan.

Cargo space is what’s most important in a wagon. We are not surprised that the new Golf Variant will continue with approximately the same 605 Liters (21.3 cubic feet) boot size as the predecessor.

In the coming months, expect a formal debut. The rugged Golf Alltrack will join the Golf Variant in the near future.
