20 cylinders, 4.0 liters.
It’s hard to believe, but Motor1.com has a lot of discussion about V16 cars. This rare engine can still be found in a variety of forms, including the V16 Cadillac 1930 and the Cizeta V16T. We haven’t discussed 20-cylinder engines so far.
You did read it right. Drivetribe has just released a video that shows the progress of what could be the first 20-cylinder automotive engine. You may think there are 20-cylinder engine. However, they are all used in diesel locomotives and haul trucks, electric generators, marine applications and other purposes.
The engine we’re referring to doesn’t have a V arrangement for the cylinders. It marries two V10 engine in a horizontally opposing arrangement. Because it has four rows each with five cylinders, the powertrain creators call it an X20 engine. This isn’t the most bizarre part.
Two crankshafts are connected to the engine’s six-speed manual transmission, which is sourced from a Lamborghini Gallardo. Two V10 engines with a displacement of 2.0 Liters were sourced from the Type-D sports car. The original units were supercharged, but they have been naturally aspirated in the X20 project.
Villiers is currently working on the project. The project is not yet complete, but we will continue to follow it closely. We’d love to hear the sound of a 20-cylinder engine.
