This four-seat DeLorean could be your family’s dream car

It is the only known one, and was constructed for the greatest reason in the universe.

The DeLorean is our favorite car. This car is a joy to drive. This car is for people who need a backseat. John Dore spent 10 years creating the DeLorean 2+2 that is still in existence. You are looking at a DeLorean that has a functional back seat. Stef Schrader from Jalopnikhas the scoop and it’s a cool story.

It looks at first glance like someone just dropped some leather-covered pillows in the spot where you would normally find the flux capacitor. But that wouldn’t take more than 10 minutes. It took 10 years to make this back seat. The car’s entire back had to be modified in order for it not to look like a shelf with padding. This meant that a tub was cut into the fiberglass body of the car to allow a person to sit comfortably without having their spine split in half. Also required the DeLorean’s suspension parts to be moved in order for the DeLorean to accommodate the new seat. A rear-engine Renault Alpine GTA donated its V6 and transmission along with the subframe, suspension, and transmission. Monumental was not an exaggeration.

After it was determined possible, a custom chassis was built to connect the Renault parts with DeLorean’s underneathpinnings. The engine is positioned a bit further back and all electronics were moved forward. Amazingly, all this was done without changing the exterior or stretching the wheelbase.

Dore, who was originally in Ireland for the project, also moved to the United States during construction. We like Herculean a lot more. There are some trim pieces and polish work that need to be done, but otherwise the car is functional and ready for adventure.

You might now be wondering why anyone would do such a thing. DeLoreans look great and are fun to drive. They are also immortalized in 1980’s pop culture by a time-travelling Hollywood trio. Why go to such great lengths to make two more seats?

It’s simple – his children could also be part of this adventure. Jalopnik has more information about this heroic automotive dad and his noble endeavor. It’s well worth the effort.
