Carrol Shelby’s nickname has been associated most closely with high-powered Fords, such as his work on the Mustang or Cobra. However, his moniker was also used on the Dodge Durango Shelby SP-356, one of the most iconic SUVs of the late 90s. This stunning example is for sale in Michigan and comes with additional engine upgrades to make it a more powerful family hauler.

The Durango SP-360 was not like the many high-power options offered by Mercedes-AMG or the BMW M division, but it arrived at a time when performance SUVs were still a niche market. Performance West and a group of aftermarket businesses created the Durango Super Pursuit to be a SEMA Showcar. It received a positive response that led to the possibility of putting the supercharged SUV into mass production. They teamed up with Carrol Shelby to add his name to the vehicle.

Durango Shelby SP-360 added a Kenne Bell twin-screw turbocharger to its standard 5.9-liter V8. The forced induction was made more efficient with revised engine management, equal-length headers and 2.5-inch exhaust. The result was 360 horsepower (269kilowatts), which is about 90 hp (67kW) more than the stock. The four-speed automatic transmission delivers the power, while the four-wheel drive ensures that the vehicle can handle slippery roads. The scan of a Motor Trend article from 1999 shows that the beast can run at 60 miles an hour (96 km per hour) in 6.7 seconds. The upgrades include a larger throttle body and a high-volume fuel pump. This car could run even faster.

These Durangos were equipped with suspension and brake upgrades to handle the extra power. The handling was improved by new bushings, Eibach shocks, and new bushings. The driver was able to slow the SUV down with a set of Stillen six-piston front brakes.

The SP-360 boasts extra power through a highly aggressive body kit. The SP-360 features a large front fascia featuring mesh grilles, integrated fog lights, and a large rear fascia. The hood has two large intakes, but the view from the engine bay doesn’t show them as functional. The exhausts are now visible from the bumper, where they can be seen growing from cutouts. The SUV’s striking appearance is completed by the Viper Blue paint and White stripes. However, the chrome 18-inch wheels are a bit too flashy.

Although the interior is not up to modern standards, it’s a significant upgrade over the Durango stock. The racing buckets are thickly padded with gray and black leather. The dashboard is finished in carbon fiber and features additional gauges for boost or fuel pressure. Although the VCR-based was an original component of the SP-360 package, it may be time for an upgrade.

The seller claims that the Durango was originally priced at just $58,000. This is an equivalent to $85,262. This Durango is currently on sale for $31,100
