You think you know it all? You might be wrong.
The Volkswagen Golf GTI has a huge enthusiast following. We’ve seen many crazy customizations over the years. There have been many modifications to the GTI all-wheel drive, including massive engine swaps and widebody kits. We haven’t seen anything even remotely like the green monster. It basically takes everything and puts it all together into one car. It’s more like an engine extension. Wait, what?
You’ll find a VR6 engine under this GTI with a turbo fitted up. This is not a common sight in the modified VW scene. However, if you look in the rear, you will see another turbocharged V6. The engines produce 1,600 horsepower (1.193 kilowatts) when combined. They are managed by two gearboxes that can either be used separately or linked together.
The GTI owner also mentions that the powertrain components of the car can operate independently. The GTI can be seen driving away with only the front engine running. There are separate brake controls to do individual front- and rear wheel burnouts. This is so freaking cool!
A twin-engined, all-wheel-drive GTI with 1,600 horsepower is very fast. The car makes a half-mile pass on the Pikes Peak Airstrip Attack. It reaches speeds of 183.74 mph (295.9 km/h), in what the owner described as a frightening run. The car doesn’t have any significant aerodynamic modifications so we completely can see it being quite a bit of a drag at high speeds. The parachute served its purpose.
After the cool front/rear burnout, the video jumps to quarter-mile drag racing. The GTI then runs 9.06 mph at 156.9 MPH (252.5 km/h). The Frankenstein VW destroyed its gearbox, or one, on its next run.
According to the VR12 owner, it is still in development. We hope it comes back stronger because this is one of our favorite builds.
