After 6,725 hours of restoration, the handsome classic made its debut at Pebble Beach.

There are many rare Jaguar cars – the XJ220 and the XJR-15 to name a few. The Jag shown here is rarer than any of the others. Pininfarina restored the one-off XK120 and it made its debut at Pebble Beach, after 6275 hours of restoration by Classic Motor Cars (CMC).

The Jaguar’s unique bodywork was created by Pininfarina (famous coachbuilder), and it was delivered to Max Hoffman, an Austrian-born exotic vehicle importer based in New York. Later, the car made its public debut at Geneva Motor Show 1955 and later at the Autocar Show later that year.

CMC purchased the car in 2015 and began to restore it to its former glory. The 6,275-hour-long nut-and bolt restoration was not without its challenges. CMC had to find the original paint color and remake the bumpers.

David Brassily, Chariman on CMC’s operating boards, stated that some of the original parts were difficult to find. “We had to make items such as bumpers and chrome work from photos so we could locate them,” he said. “We had the car scanned from the front and back and made mockups of the lights. These were then 3D printed. The 3D printing of smaller parts that were missing was also done in-house. We also had to scan the rear window aperture in order to make a new screen.

The restoration details included a complete body makeover that included a new front, rear quarter panels and inner arch panels as well as a boot floor, sills, doors skins, and a new boot floor. The chassis was completely repaired and repainted. 80 percent of the original chrome work and the rear windshield were also remade. The interior was completely retrimmed.

The engine and gearbox were rebuilt under the hood. The original manual gearbox is paired with the 3.4-liter straight six, which now produces 180 horsepower (134kW). It was built to the original Jaguar specification and won second place in the Pebble Beach CONCEPT class 2 Postwar Closed.
