It’s a new kind of adventure.
The Grand Tour has again taken its studio on tour, but this episode’s hijinks are so elaborate and grand that there is no time for an in-studio session. There are no jokes, Conversation Street and certainly no Celebrity Brain Crash.
Richard Hammond and James May offer one tip to make your classic, air-cooled Beetle even more enjoyable: Take off the bodywork and transform it into a beach buggy.
Although the boys created very different beach buggies, Hammond’s was deemed more like a Dakar/safari vehicle than Clarkson or May.
It would be difficult to drive 1000 miles across desert to reach a crocodile-infested stream. They’ve done bigger jobs before.
Wait, what’s the desert like? What happens to a ship when it is deserted?
Abandoned means that there were probably no diamonds to find. Better luck next time. This is the first sign that the trio may be seriously off-balance.
They are back at the sea. Clarkson says, “I didn’t know Namibia had two seas.” It doesn’t. They are just lost.
Clarkson demonstrates this clearly. Although it is a common practice for colleagues to abandon Clarkson, Hammond shows generosity and gives Clarkson’s buggy an extra push.
Sand dunes are steep and difficult to climb. If you don’t have a V8 or a beach buggie with lots of ground clearance, it will be difficult to climb sand dunes. It’s going be difficult if you don’t. But what happens when it goes up?
The drop-offs that the trio must descend can be incredibly steep and rollercoaster-like. Hammond says, “I wasn’t scared” after a particularly difficult descent.
Although it may not be a great road, a major road, or a paved one; it does mean that there is no more cold nights sleeping on the sand.
This is the end of part 1. Tomorrow will be the second half of Namibia’s special.
