Is the difference of 158 horses really significant?
Aftermarket tuning provides many options for car owners. Car owners often tune their cars with significant aesthetic upgrades that can sometimes improve the performance. Some go so far as to decorate their cars with Swarovski Crystals.
However, other tuners are more focused on performance. These tuned cars promise more fun driving and faster times by adding horsepower and pulling power to their engines. How much power does it really make?
Top Gear pitted two BMW M5s against each other in a Drag Race. This isn’t your ordinary M5s. The M5 Competition package is the first M5 and is a slightly enhanced version of the already thrilling M5. DMS has tuned the other M5 to suit its needs.
The M5 Competition’s twin-turbo S63 twin-turbo V8 produces 616 horsepower and 553 lb-ft torque. The M5 Competition’s acceleration time is 3.3 seconds. It can go from 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 miles/h). It weighs in at 4,112 pounds (1.865 kilograms) and has four doors.
The BMW M5 DMS uses the same engine but is tuned to produce more power. It produces 774 horsepower and 649 lb/ft torque. It is also lighter at 22 lbs (10kg). This M5 pump-up is even better! You’ll pay only PS2,795 (or $3,632 at current exchange rates).
These differences are clear. Does the 158-hp gap in drag racing make a difference? To find out, watch the video at the top of this page.
