Japan’s first supercar deserves a reboot, too.

The return of Toyota’s iconic sports car is making motoring news. While we’re referring to the Supra, there’s a promising designer at Behance.net who hasn’t forgotten Toyota’s other legendary performance vehicle, one for whom we should all be thankful. The Supra might not have been created if it weren’t for its short but sweet tenure in the late 1960s. It’s no stretch to say that all of the great Japanese sports cars, from the Skyline and 240Z to the NSX, owe their existence to the Toyota. The 2000GT proved that Japan can build more than small hatchbacks. And the world listened. It’s not common to find a 2000GT original selling for less that $1 million these days.

It’s now been reimagined in this cool render as a modern machine, and we like what we see. The new Supra has a lot of influence, which is not a bad thing. Although the car isn’t yet officially revealed, the double-bubble roof design and small rear window that slants upwards were straight from preproduction models. Although the sides have been sculpted from the new Supra, the major changes are in the front.

The 2000GT’s distinctive driving lamps are nestled in the gaping grille. However, if we were to be honest, we would prefer a little more slope to the roof and a smaller gaping grille. OK, maybe a lot smaller grille. We should also add a little more side glass to the rear pillars to give this Supra-esque 2000GT design a little more personality. We love the way this render shows the sketches of the designer that were used to bring this creation to life 3D.

This rendering got us talking about the Motor1.com office . Toyota is trying to regain some of the enthusiast enthusiasm that it lost in the 2000s. Although the Supra will help, we cannot help but wonder if there will be some purists who will label the Supra a badge-engineered Bimmer. The 2000GT is a niche halo car that can be positioned above the Supra. We don’t know of any better way to silence those who doubt it.
