Officials call it “little brother” to the Supra.
According to Brodie Bott, Toyota Australia’s public affairs manager, the Toyota 86 will get a second generation. This will allow customers to have a higher performance vehicle than the Supra. The Japanese magazine Best Car reported last week that Subaru and Toyota weren’t replacing the BRZ.
Bott stated that he didn’t know the source of the reports, but that at this point, we are not planning to discontinue the Supra.
A spokesperson from the United States made the same statement assuring that the 86’s future was secured to Motor1.com . “As AkioToyoda stated at the unveiling of the 2020 Supra: Toyota is committed building exciting vehicles, even sports cars. According to a representative of Toyota, the 86 has been part of the Toyota family since 2013. The plan is for it to continue to be a part Toyota’s sports car lineup.”
Rumors suggest that Subaru & Toyota will continue their partnership for new generations. The debut could be as early as 2021. The 2.4-liter flat four-engine is said to be the power source. This could be the turbocharged version of the Ascent, producing 260 horsepower and 277 pounds-feet. They would have a lower center-of-gravity to allow for better handling.
Toyota may give the 86 a final goodbye before the new model arrives. A trademark filed indicates that the model has the GR moniker, which is named after the company’s Gazoo racing performance division.
