Toyota Camry, Certain Lexus Cars Are Recalled for Fire Risk

21700 vehicles could be at risk from fuel leakage.

Recalls of automobiles are not good. However, when they involve fire, it’s often worse. This is the essence of the Toyota recall that was announced today. It involves the Camry and a variety of Lexus vehicles going back to 2015. The recall covers 21,700 vehicles, which indicates the possibility of fuel leakage that could lead to a fire. Although the recall is deemed to be one, it actually addresses two distinct problems with the Lexus and Camry cars.

Particularly, Toyota Camrys of the 2018 model year could have fuel lines in their engine compartment that were not properly connected. 11800 Camrys could be affected. The symptoms are clearly fuel odor. A fire can start if a leak is detected near an ignition source.

Leakage of fuel pumps is the second problem in certain Lexus vehicles (2015 – 2018 F, 2016, -2018 G F and 2018 L 500). Fuel pump covers are the problem. They can become worn over time, allowing fuel to leak out. If the fuel leaking into an ignition source becomes ignited, it can quickly get very hot. This recall affects 9,900 Lexus models.

Both Toyota and Lexus dealers will inspect the affected vehicles and replace or repair any damaged components free of charge. There have been no reports about injuries or leakage from the affected vehicles. Toyota states that owners of recall vehicles will start receiving notices by mail in April. We hope none of these cars burst into flames. Toyota advises customers to call the Customer Experience Center at 800-331-4331, and the Lexus Guest Experience Center, at 800-255-3987.
