Toyota Supra enthusiasts will be pleased to learn that the man in charge of the company’s sports cars, has revealed a new concept.
The F-FR concept is currently displayed in Tokyo by Toyota. However, work is well underway at the opposite end of the spectrum where the long-awaited Supra resurrection is planned for a release in years to come. The FT-1 concept , which was pictured here last year, served as a preview of a modern Supra. A follow-up will be released in 2016, according to Tetsuya Taka, chief of Toyota’s sports cars division.
Although he didn’t specify when, we believe it will be announced at NAIAS in January. The FT-1 was unveiled at the same Detroit show. Tada said the new concept will use new technologies. He also hinted that it would have a sequential gearbox, and an engine that will not try to win horsepower races. The car will be more fun than its power. Tada said the engine would outperform German counterparts and that the car would be more fun than a Porsche 911.
The new Supra, which is being described as the GT86’s “big bro”, is being developed in partnership with BMW. It is expected to be about the same size and weight as a 911. The new Toyota sports car will be able to drive with an inline-six turbo 3.0-liter turbo that produces at least 335 horsepower (250 kW) or 331 lbft (450Nm), as well as a more powerful plug-in hybrid version which generates 473 bhp (353kW).
We will hopefully learn more about the Supra when the previewing concept is released next year. The production version will follow in 2017.
