The device is expected to go on sale in summer 2023.
The Crown SUV will be the next addition to Toyota’s SUV lineup. According to a new Reuters report, the automaker plans to expand its Crown brand and add a high-riding model to complement the sedan. It will be available in Japan and Toyota plans to export it to China.
Although details are not available at this time, the publication spoke with three people about the company’s plans. The device will be available in three options: fully electric, hybrid, and plug-in. According to the report, sales will start in the summer 2023. However, not all markets will get every configuration. The plug-in hybrid will remain on the domestic market.
According to the report the hybrid and plug in hybrid models will be launched first with the full-electric version following in 2024. Two Reuters sources confirmed that the company is still working on export plans for this model. It doesn’t include any information on the platform, powertrains or design.
The SUV could be placed above the Sequoia, which is likely to replace the discontinued Land Cruiser US. It should have all the latest features if it is a top-of-the-line model. Toyota offers the Land Cruiser on other markets. Toyota refused to discuss its alleged plans with Reuters.
Toyota isn’t the first to expand a sedan model to include an SUV. The 2022 Corolla Cross was launched by last year. Toyota is following the market’s trend towards crossovers and SUVs. The iconic Crown sedan won’t be leaving the market. The Crown will be getting a complete refresh this summer. Toyota launched the 15th-generation four-door in 2018. In 2021, added new technology to the vehicle.
Over the past few years, Toyota has increased its range of SUVs and crossovers. It makes sense to add a range-topping model as more people are buying new cars. Toyota will expand the Crown brand beyond its home country.
