Toyota Electric SUV Teased. Will Ride on e-TNGA Platform for EVs

Toyota will launch the eTNGA platform by launching a midsize SUV.

Toyota is a pioneer in hybrid technology. They plan to use their electric know-how for future vehicles that eliminate the combustion engine. Toyota has created a platform called “e-TNGA” that is specifically designed for EVs. The first example of this platform will be a mid-sized SUV.

The unnamed model will be made in Japan at an EV only factory. It has been already developed with the assistance of
Subaru Production is currently underway. Toyota states that it will sell the SUV in Europe for the moment, but does not provide any details regarding availability on the Old Continent.

It is certain that it will become a global model but we also know that it will be “very European” in its design and DNA. This disclosure was made by Andrea Carlucci, Toyota’s European product development boss.

This model will compete against the Nissan Ariya and Volkswagen ID.4, but also Subaru’s version, likely named “Evoltis.” It is followed by other e-TNGA products including a compact crossover developed with Suzuki, a large SUV, a sedan, and a minivan. To distinguish them from conventionally powered Toyotas, all six models will be given new names.

According to Autocar, the midsize SUV’s unveiling is expected to occur sometime in 2021. According to Matt Harrison, Toyota Europe’s marketing and sales chief, the SUV will be available “in a few years,” according to Automotive News Europe. Toyota promises to provide more details over the next few months. The e-TNGA platform is designed for all-wheel drive setups, including front- and rear-wheel drives. It also supports a variety of electric motors and battery packs.

Subaru’s AWD know-how has been a boon during development. Andrea Carlucci claims that it offers the best balance between all regions. As part of an important electrification push, the new Toyota electric SUV will be a complement to the hybrid and plug in hybrid RAV4 and a second-generation mirai as well as a hybrid hypercar.
