Peter Lyon, Automotive journalist, says Toyota’s concept is a preview for a long-awaited Supra revival.
The striking FT-1 concept was unveiled by Toyota at the North American International Auto Show in January. They stated that it would remain a concept and will only be displayed in Gran Turismo. Peter Lyon claims that Toyota is currently working on a new Supra. This will essentially be a production version of the FT-1 Concept with a V6 2.5-liter turbocharged motor and an electric motor. The combined output of these two engines will exceed 402 bhp (300 kW).
Toyota is rumored to be planning to launch the new Supra in 2016, with a rear-wheel drive configuration and a LFA rear transaxle. The price should be less than 100,000 dollars and the base model will include a Lexus NX-sourced 4-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine, 2.0-liter turbocharged.
Toyota will launch a new entry-level sportscar in the GT86’s place. It will be a hybrid model with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine and an electrical motor. The model, which will be priced at 16,000 USD, will go hand in hand with the resurrected Supra. This will open the door to a new range from Toyota of sportscars that will likely be co-developed by BMW.
