According to a recent report, Toyota has approved a sedan version of the FT-86.
Carsguide reports that the sedan will look almost identical to the coupe, although details are not available. We can expect a 2.0-liter Boxer engine with naturally-aspirated power, a six speed manual transmission, ADVICS brakes, rear-wheel drive, and a six-speed manual transmission. The car may eventually be equipped with Subaru’s 3.6 liter H6 engine as well as a hybridized Boxer powerplant.
Sources familiar with the matter say that the sedan acts as a “safety blanket” for the coupe in the event it fails to sell.
The FT-86 sedan will go on sale in 2013 and would be positioned to be a premium model. It would be in direct competition with the BMW 1/3-Series, the VW Golf GTI/Audi A3.
