There is always another hot hatch.
We are just a few days away from the 2022 Toyota GR 86 reveal. Internet artists are quick and can come up with some great ideas. We’re not surprised by the GR86, but we are struck with a strange realization. The world has a GR 86-type shooting brake. It’s sort of.
Let us first reiterate the headline. This is not a true story, but one of many beautiful renderings that we have seen. X-Tomi Design Over the years. The conversion from coupe to shot brake is quite simple this time, since the GR 86 has a very short deck at its back. You can instantly use a shooting brake by straightening the roof and building up the rear leg. It’s beautiful, but it’s also familiar. We know why.
Toyota’s GR Yaris three-door is the inspiration for the rear pillar and glass. The front clip on the 86 is clearly different than the Yaris. Additionally, the hood is larger to accommodate the north-south architecture (either manual or automatic) of the 2.4-liter four pot and six-speed transmission.
There is definitely a lot of Yaris influence from the A-pillar back. With a turbocharged engine that drives all four wheels and a turbocharged 3-cylinder engine, the hot hatch is a beast. A rear-wheel-drive hot-hatch with three pedals might be more fun.
We won’t know the truth because this GR 86-style shooting brake is purely imaginary. Toyota already owns the GR Yaris, so it wouldn’t be foolish to add a performance-oriented machine with similar specs to its existing lineup. Subaru would need to construct it, since the 86 is a cloned brother of the BRZ.
You can just take a look at the rendering to see what it looks like. If you truly love it – and you are not in the US – then you can just buy a GR Yaris to continue your dreams.
