Japanese automaker Nissan is currently working on the GT3 model.
Toyota Motor Corporation submitted an application for a Registered Community Design (RCD), to the European Union Intellectual Property Office. To be granted rights to a particular design by all EU members, a RCD application must be filed. As of the writing, Toyota’s application was “registered” and fully public.
We can see that the patent images include a separate submission for the design patent for the taillights. This suggests they are based on the Toyota GR GT3 Concept presented at the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon without the huge rear wing. This could be the prototype of the production model. An earlier report suggested so.
This month, Motor Trend‘s Group Vice President Product Strategy and Product Planning at Toyota of America Cooper Erickson stated that the GR GT3 Concept is now in development. It’s only natural to see design patents being filed. Not to be confused with the GR GT3 Concept, the EUIPO design patents don’t have any name. However, the resemblance is undisputed.
The patent images clearly show the GR GT3 grand tourer styling, despite the slight differences in the front bumper and specific design details. The patent images show a more conservative approach to GT3 styling than the original concept’s wild and stunning design.
Toyota has not provided details about the powertrain of the GR GT3. Toyota did mention that the GR GT3 was a development car to attract the attention of potential GT3 racers.
Toyota Racing Development President David Wilson gave some hints about the GR GT3 as well as a future product that could be adapted to its stay. According to the executive, the next generation Lexus RC could borrow styling cues form the concept. Wilson stated that it was possible to link the dots and suggest that this could be a precursor for the next Lexus GT3 car.
As Toyota develops the GR GT3, we will learn more about its future, so keep an eye on us.
