It could have 986 horsepower if it is as good as the concept.
The Toyota GR Super Sport Concept is moving to the road and race track. The company plans to give the hypercar an even more catchy name for the production version. The racing version will make its debut in fall 2020. However, track testing will begin early next year to get a better idea of the design.
The GR Super Sport brand’s entry in the FIA World Endurance Championship is compliant with the new regulations. Automakers must produce at least 20 versions that can be used on the road within two years from the date of the competition’s start. This arrangement allows automakers to market their halo products more easily on the track. Aston Martin, which is not Toyota, is the only company that has confirmed an entry to the series.
“For Toyota Gazoo Racing this new era in competition is a fantastic chance to demonstrate our credentials both as a race team against the best in business and as a sports car maker,” Shigeki Toyama, Gazoo Racing Company President said in the announcement.
The maximum horsepower of the racing vehicles must be 750. Although hybrid power is permitted, it is not required. The system must not produce more than 270 horsepower. The electrification can power a front axle to encourage hybrid teams, thereby making these entries all-wheel-drive.
The GR Super Sport is a concept. It uses a 2.4-liter twin turbo V6 that produces 986 horsepower (735 kilowatts). Its design is more suited for track use than road cars, with no rear windows and a vertical fin that runs along the rear deck. The pricing is at the same level as a hypercar. This suggests a price well above the six figures, possibly even exceeding $1 million.
