Toyota Sequoia TRD pro teaches an old dog new tricks in Chicago

All TRD Pro models get some new features.

The Toyota Sequoia is still around. The SUV, which is almost 20 years old, still has three rows. Toyota will display its most rugged Sequoia, the TRD Pro model, at the Chicago Auto Show to refresh those who may have lost their memories. It looks tough…ish.

Although the exterior of the Sequoia TRD Pro is quite subtle, it’s still very similar to the rest. The TRD Pro’s exterior features such as the “TOYOTA” wordmark on the grille, and the black 18.8-inch BBS wheels are still present. The Sequoia’s chrome grille is replaced with a black finish, its halogen headlights are replaced by LEDs, and it receives a set Rigid Industries LED fog lights.

There are four paint colors that customers can choose from. Army Green, Super White, Midnight Black Metallic and Magnetic Grey Metallic are the only colors available for the TRD Pro line. The Sequoia TRD Pro has a number of off-road features, including a front skid plate and cast aluminum running boards. A TRD roof rack also enhances function. There’s more to it than meets the eye.

The Sequoia’s off-road capabilities are enhanced by new internal bypass Fox shocks. The 2.5-inch front shocks have seven compression zones and two rebound zones. Each zone is 18 millimeters (0.7 in) larger. A reduced spring rate is also included. This was done to enhance off-road capability. Rear shocks measure two inches but have larger pistons of 47 millimeters (1.9 inches) and thicker shock rods. They are widened by three millimeters (0.1 inch).

The base 5.7-liter V8 produces 381 horsepower and 401 pounds-feet torque. However, there is an option to add a TRD cat back exhaust. The Sequoia TRD Pro, which is paired with a six speed automatic transmission, can tow up 7,100 pounds (which makes it SAE J2807 compliant). It also comes with tow assistance features such as an integrated tow hitch and a selectable Tow/Haul driving modes.

This Sequoia comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense P. This suite includes pre-collision warning and pedestrian detection, as well as automatic braking, lane departure alert, dynamic cruise control with full halt, and automatic high beams.

All models in the updated TRD Pro portfolio get a new multimedia system that supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa. The Tundra and Tacoma get an eight-inch touchscreen while the 4Runner gets a seven-inch one.
