Although the new platform supports plug-in capabilities, a Sienna Prime is unlikely to be on the docket.
The 2021 Toyota Sienna was the first vehicle in its class to use a hybrid powertrain instead of a traditional gasoline engine. The minivan has 243 horsepower (181kilowatts) at 33 mpg (estimated Toyota). The optional all-wheel drive system is also available. Some are wondering if Toyota will offer the Sienna with a similar plug-in setup to the Prime. The short answer is no.
Toyota has sold over 15 million hybrids globally to date. And the company is not slowing down. In the same conference call, Bob Carter, Toyota’s Executive Vice President of Sales, stated that Toyota wants to have a fully-electrified lineup by 2025 with 25% of all sales being electric. Already, the Japanese automaker is seeing success with its two new electrified SUVs, the RAV4 (and Highlander hybrids).
Carter notes that hybrids are the most in-demand RAV4s and Highlanders. “We have been severely short of RAV4 Hybrids ever since we introduced it.”
Toyota will only know if it changes its mind about the possibility of a plug in Sienna Prime or Venza Prime. Buyers looking for a minivan that plugs will have to settle for the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid.
