Although nothing is certain, Toyota doesn’t rule out the possibility of creating an open-roof Supra.

Tetsuya TADA, chief engineer Toyota Supra admits that the company may build an open-top version the upcoming sports coupe. Tada stated that the company is considering this for Australian website Carsales.

Tada did not provide any further information about the model or confirm that development had begun. According to Toyota executives speaking to Carsales, the Supra will remain a coupe while the Z4 will be a convertible.

Toyota Supra Convertible under Consideration

Although it’s unclear what type of open-top Toyota will use for this Supra variant of the Supra, the model has a history of offering customers a removable roofing panel. This option was available on third- and fourth-generation Supras. The Supra manufacturer also offered the first-gen Celica Supra Legato, which was only available through the aftermarket coachbuilder Griffith Company. (gallery shown below shows the similar, Celica-based TX22 from this same company).

At the North American International Auto Show, on January 14, 2019, the new Supra makes its final appearance. The new Supra should be available for sale in 2019. Rumours suggest that prices will start at $63,000. However, this could be for the six-cylinder version and not the base four-cylinder. Tada’s team is also said to be working on a harder-core version that will offer more power and take inspiration from the race car.

The United States doesn’t have any topless vehicles in their entire Toyota or Lexus range, so the Supra could be modified to include a removable roof panel. This would fill a gap in the automaker’s product line. The soft top design of the Z4 shows that the platform is strong enough to allow cutting without making it too unstable on the road.
