Toyota Supra Faces VW GolfR In Drag Race With Unexpected Results

AWD versus RWD, 2.0 versus 3.0.

Another day another opponent confronts the new Toyota Supra at the drag strip. The drag race involving the Japanese coupe is the most thrilling. We bet you’ll agree after only a few minutes. The Supra is positioned against the Volkswagen GolfR for this chase. Cars.co.za received the latest performance cars and brought them to Killarney Drag Strip in Cape Town, South Africa. This is described as a “good old-fashioned quarter mile drag race head-tohead shootout.”

The new Supra is fast, it’s true. The coupe is powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged engine from the BMW Z4, which produces at least 335 horsepower (250 megawatts). The power is actually even greater. This basically means that the car is much more powerful than the Golf R. Following the facelift the latest generation hatchback comes with a 2.0-liter turbo TSI motor. It generates 306 horsepower (228 kW). There is a difference in the displacement, cylinders and power between them. Drag racing isn’t all about power. The Supra should run faster from 0-60 miles per hour (0-96 km/h) than the Golf R’s 4.8 seconds. The Supra’s speed is only a matter of paper. The Golf has shown it can run at a faster pace than Volkswagen claims with times of 4.4 to 4.5 seconds for the 0-62mph (0-100 km/h) run. This makes the difference between them very small, and any slight error by the drivers at the start line could make or break the race. This is exactly what happened here.
