Toyota was pleased with the ZF manual transmission unit.
We’re sure that you are aware that Toyota will be offering a fifth-generation Supra with a stick-shift transmission for the model year 2023. Although the details of the six speed manual transmission, such as their origin and who-developed it, were not disclosed at the announcements, a report by The Drive provides some insight. A Toyota spokesperson confirmed to the publication that the parts used in the gearbox are a combination ZF-manufactured automatic transmissions but that the parts combination is unique to GR Supra.
The spokesperson told The Drive that ZF and BMW partnered for many things including design/layout of the shift lever/pedal and the decision of final gear ratio, tuning the intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT), and shift feel.
The 2.0-liter four banger sDrive20i is the BMW Z4 with a manual transmission. This gearbox is part coded GS6L40LZ. The 2023 Toyota Supra’s six speed MT uses a BMW part number of GS6L50TZ. The six-speed manual is called “GS6”, while Z refers to ZF, the manufacturer. According to TheDrive, the differences between “L40L”, and “L50T”, are in their transmission type as well as their gearset.
Toyota’s iMT has a rev-match function that ensures consistent performance when downshifting. For better acceleration and take-off, the manual version has a 3.46 final drive ratio. The 6-speed MT, unlike the BMW Z4, is only available to the 3.0-liter inline six-powered Toyota Supra. The four-pot Supra is available as an AT-only option if you are interested. The 2023 Toyota Supra-MT will be available to US dealers in the latter part of this year. The pricing will be revealed in due course, but it is important to remember that only 500 units of the A91-MT model are available in either CU Later Gray (or Matte White)
