This is the second COTY win for the hatchback.
Named the new Toyota Yaris. The Japanese hatchback won the title, leaving behind models like the Fiat 500 and Cupra Formentor, Land Rover Defender, Land Rover Defender and Citroen C4.
The Geneva Motor Show was the location for this year’s ECOTY event. However, the show was cancelled for 2021 and the organizers were forced to hold the event at the same place (Palexpo in Geneva), and broadcast it globally.
The Toyota Yaris was named as a finalist for the competition in January, along with six other cars of different categories. To be eligible for the contest, the model must be brand new and be available on five or more European markets before the year ends.
The new Yaris was praised because of its “looks,” perceived quality, safety, comfort equipment, performance, and handling. However, the hatchback’s hybrid system, which is extremely efficient, was what garnered the most attention.
Frank Janssen, President of the Car of the Year 2021 Jury, commented, “A worthy winner of the year’s election who deservedly prevailed over six top-class competitors.”
Toyota was delighted to be awarded the award. Matt Harrison, Executive Vice President, Toyota Motor Europe said that it was a great honor to be recognized by the jury. “I would also like to use this opportunity to acknowledge the passion of our European and Japanese development teams.”
Only the third European COTY award double winner is the Yaris. The Japanese model will join the Renault Clio, Volkswagen Golf and Volkswagen Golf that have each won the competition multiple times.
