Tri-Motor Tesla Cybertruck Coming Sooner, Single-Motor Delayed

You must supply if there is demand.

Tesla opened preorders for the Cybertruck. Tesla stated that the high-powered, three-motor truck would go into production in 2022, almost a year after its single-motor and dual-motor counterparts. This has been changed. Preorders for the truck list tri- and double-motor production, which is expected to start in late 2021. Tesla has decided to delay the start of rear-wheel-drive, sing-motor production until late 2022. This effectively flips the production dates.

Although it’s natural to think back to Telsa and its bungled rollout for the $35,000 Model 3, this move seems benign. Elon Musk, CEO of , tweeted that 41 per cent of the 146,000 Cybertruck preorders for the tri-motor version were made after Tesla revealed the truck and started collecting $100 deposits. Only 17 percent of the preorders for Cybertruck were for the single-motor model. Forty-two per cent chose the dual-motor design.

The Cybertruck’s entry-level single motor Cybertruck seems to have been disadvantaged by the low preorder percentages. Musk tweeted days after the unveiling that Tesla had received 250,000 preorders. This likely convinced Tesla to overhaul the truck’s production schedule and build the most in-demand trims. The dual-motor and tri-motor trucks are $10,000 and $30,000 cheaper than the entry-level single motor truck, which starts at $39,000.

Although Tesla has not been able to meet deadlines in the past we are still two years away Cybertruck production starting. There is much that can happen between now, and then. The legality of the truck’s design , as well as its conformance to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards are questions that remain. A redesign could help delay production.

The truck’s unusual design is attracting attention. Its stunning exterior is made of stainless steel and features a sharp, sci-fi-inspired design. The tri-motor model promises incredible performance. The truck can tow up 14,000 pounds and has 500 mile range. It can also sprint to 60 mph in just 2.9 seconds. It is easy to see why so many people overlook this single-motor truck.
