Turbo Lag Eliminated by Mercedes-AMG Electric Exhaust Gas Turbocharger

The engine response time will be immediate

AMG’s vow to embrace electrification is well-known. This follows its 2013 launch of the SLS AMG Electric Drive. All “73” models will have plug-in hybrid powertrains of around 800 horsepower. The AMG One will boast a F1-derived electrified powertrain that will produce four-digit horsepower. The Affalterbach boys and girls have an additional ace in their arsenal: an electric turbocharger.

The new electric exhaust gas turbocharger promises to end the turbo lag. Garrett Motion and AMG collaborated to develop the new e-turbo. It is inspired by Formula 1 racing and combines the speed of a smaller turbocharger with the high peak performance a larger turbo.

How can turbo lag be eliminated? Installing a small electric motor in the turbocharger shaft between the compressor wheel on fresh air and the turbine wheel on exhaust, will eliminate the turbo lag. The electric motor measures approximately 1.6 inches (4 cm) in length and powers the compressor wheel before accepting exhaust gas flow.

This method eliminates the delay of a traditional turbocharger, resulting in an engine that is more responsive immediately and throughout the entire range of rpm. AMG claims that the e-turbo helps the ICE deliver more torque at lower engine speeds. This makes the engine significantly more responsive than a traditional turbocharged one. The turbocharger can reach speeds up to 170,000 RPM, which guarantees optimal airflow.

Mercedes-AMG does not say which vehicle will benefit from this cutting-edge technology. However, we know from Garrett that the e-turbo could be fitted in a road-going vehicle by next year. It could be the AMG GT 73. The Black Series It will be revealed in the “next generation” of vehicles, according to the press release.

Tobias Moers from AMG, who will be Aston Martin’s CEO starting August 1, has already stated that the Black Series will feature “something different” with its engine. He also said “we never did anything like this before – For AMG it’s one.” However, it remains to be determined if he was referring specifically to the eturbo.
