Ultra-Rare Porsche Schuppan 962CR Visits Jay Leno’s Garage

Yes, it’s road-legal!

Jay Leno meets Matthew Ivanhoe in the latest episode on his YouTube show. Matthew Ivanhoe is the proud owner of one of six Porsche Schuppan 962CRs. Have you ever heard of this car? Here’s the story.

Vern Schuppan (Australian racecar driver) built the vehicle. He won both the 1983 24 Hours of Le Mans title and the 1983 All Japan Sports Prototype Championship title. The Porsche 962-winning Porsche 962 was the inspiration for the vehicle’s name. It was designed with official approval and support from Porsche. It is made entirely of carbon fiber and shares many lines with the original Porsche 962 race car. It weighs in at 2,315 pounds (1.050 kg).

A 3.2-liter flat-six liquid-cooled engine with twin KKK turbochargers produces 600 horsepower (447 kilowatts) of power. The power output is slightly lower with low boost. However, the driver can adjust the boost from his seat. The power is sent to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission, achieving a top speed of 230 mph (370 km/h). It takes approximately 3.5 seconds to sprint from a standstill at 60 mph (96 km/h).

Porsche Schuppan 962CR was built in the United Kingdom and not in Australia. It was sold for over $1.5million in 1994, making it one of the most expensive new cars ever. Six examples were made, with chassis 1 being the prototype. This particular example has a slightly different body than the rest. This car was also undoubtedly never driven on the streets before it made its debut in the series.

This is the Schuppan 962CR, according to various sources. It is also one of four still in existence.
