UPDATE: Toyota RAV4 Prime Gets Plug-In Power and Impressive Range This may be the most impressive RAV4 to date. The RAV4 is undoubtedly the most important vehicle in Toyota’s lineup. The plug-in Prime model will make the crossover even more beloved. The Toyota RAV4 Prime is not only the most powerful crossover Toyota has ever made, but it’s also the most fuel-efficient Toyota vehicle. Similar to the Prius, the addition of the word Prime denotes plug-in ability in Toyota speak. The RAV4 Prime boasts impressive numbers thanks to its extra battery power. The RAV4 hybrid’s 219 ponies (163kW) has a respectable 302 horse power (225 kilowatts). This results in a 5.8 second zero-to-60 time, which is the second fastest acceleration time in Toyota’s lineup. It is also faster than the Supra. The RAV4’s efficiency numbers are as impressive as it is. The RAV4 Prime will achieve 90 MPGe and can travel up to 39 miles using electric power. This is a significant improvement on the 25-mile range of the Prius Prime’s EV. This figure is also the highest of any PHEV SUV. The 2.5-liter Atkinson cycle four-cylinder engine that powers the RAV4 Prime makes 176 horsepower (131 kW) in both cases. The Prime has a new high capacity lithium-ion battery pack with booster converter. This gives it an 83 horsepower (62 kW) advantage over the hybrid model. Toyota claims that the larger battery pack does not impede cargo space. It is mounted below the floor so there is no loss of cargo space. The trunk still holds 37.6 cubic feet. The 2021 RAV4 Prime will go on sale next summer and will be available in SE and XSE trims. Although Toyota has not yet announced pricing, we can expect it to be slightly more expensive than the RAV4 hybrid’s $28,100 MSRP. The starting price could make the case for Toyota’s star crossover.
