Finally, a new Stuttgart halo car. Probably.
Porsche’s sportscar lineup is bigger than ever. Although the Stuttgart-based automaker has some 911 and 718-based offerings that are filling different niches, it still doesn’t have a true flagship model. A new report suggests that this could change with an unexpected move by Porsche.
According to Australia’s Drive, a new-generation GT1 hypercar is in development. According to a Porsche employee, the brand had already received deposits from potential VIP buyers. Drive was informed of the rumor by Spike Feresten, a Porsche enthusiast.
Feresten stated that a deposit can be made on a Porsche GT1 right now if they’d like. The rumor is that they will announce it in August. A new Porsche GT1 mid engine special car will be unveiled that will follow the lead of the Carrera GT and the 918… and the new GT1.
Let’s not get too excited about this, but it is unlikely that anything of the sort has been confirmed. The report also states that Jerry Seinfeld (comedian and actor) was not aware of the rumors about a successor to the GT1 ideology. This could indicate the credibility of the rumor, but it could also be a sign that Seinfeld wasn’t among the VIP clients.
If the rumors are true, it will be interesting to see if Porsche will use the most recent 911 as the base for its new hypercar, or a race car from its motorsport division. Drive speculates that the new road-going hypercar could have its origins in this machine. It seems too good to be true.
