Volkswagen unveiled a turbodiesel four-cylinder engine of 2.0-liter power during a presentation at Wolfsburg, Germany.
Volkswagen’s all new Passat was released a few months back. It features a four-cylinder, 2.0 liter TDI biturbo rated up to 240HP (176 kW). Two-stage electricly operated turbocharger has been added to the same engine to increase its output to 272 HP (200kW). The torque figure is not yet known, but it could be slightly higher than the 500 Nm (369lb-ft.) in the Passat.
This added power was achieved not only through the installation of an electric turbocharger, but also by installing a variable valve timing system as well as a Piezo commonrail injection system that can operate at pressures up to 2,500 bars.
Volkswagen also revealed some details about the 10-speed DSG transmission, which can handle up to 550 Nm (405 Lb-ft). The ‘box, codenamed DQ551, is an evolution of the six speed unit. It will have a coasting function for fuel savings and a brake energy recuperation system that promises to be more efficient.
