Many reports have been circulating about the possibility that a production version of the Golf R400 concept has been made since Volkswagen unveiled it more than a decade ago. VW confirmed plans and now spy photos of a prototype are available ahead of next year’s launch at a much higher price than the Golf R (EUR39,000), but below the EUR50,000 mark.

The concept had 400 PS from a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine. However, production versions will have 420 PS. Our spy photographers claim that the prototype in the attached images sounds like a 5-cylinder. However, we must wait until Volkswagen confirms this.

The engine will power a 4MOTION all wheel drive system. However, the identity of the gearbox is unknown at this time. It will most likely be a DSG. The prototype is clearly based on the 300 PS , but it has larger alloy wheels, a front spoiler lip and a large roof-mounted wings. It also features a lowered sports suspension.

The Volkswagen Golf R400/ R420 will be on display at major auto shows in 2016, possibly in Geneva.
