Volkswagen Golf: Side by Side the Changes

Interior gets a complete makeover.

The 2020 Volkswagen Golf makes its debut to and introduces a new generation into the hatchback’s lineup for the first time since 2012. The five-door hatchback is redesigned by VW without sacrificing the Golf’s legendary success.

Motor1.com’s slider tool allows you to compare the models. The new model is on top, while the seventh-gen is to the left.

The eighth-gen Golf’s front end shows significant improvements over the previous model. The nose now has a prominent downward arch and the headlights are lower at the front. The car’s width is shortened by the line drawn by the lamp’s upper edge. This gives it a modern, sleek appearance. All Golf trims come with LED headlights.

Three strakes also extend the width of the front fascia. This, combined with the line of the headlights under the hood makes the new Golf seem wider than it is. The 8th generation model is actually a little smaller at 70.43 inches (1.789 mm), compared to 70.8 inches (1.799 mm), for the previous generation.

Although the design changes to the Golf’s rear may not be as important as those made at the front, there are still significant improvements. The new taillights have a more striking appearance. The Golf badge, which is now larger, sits in the middle of the hatchback. The bumper still includes the trapezoidal exhaust pipes, which have a similar design.

As you can see, the new Golf’s rear window is smaller. This is due to the way that the rear spoiler attaches on the roof to cover more of the glass below.

These exterior changes are minimal in comparison to the interior design improvements Volkswagen has made to the new Golf. Standard equipment includes a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel, and an 8.25 inch infotainment display. These screens are now located at the top of each model’s center stack. An option is available for a 10-inch infotainment screen. A styling update has been made to the center console, especially for vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission.
