VW gave some intriguing confirmations about future models in a rather dry announcement regarding exceeding European CO2 fleet emission targets for 2020. VW now confirms that the ID.4 GTX coupe-inspired model and the ID.5 performance-focused variant will be available in 2021. This is part of a plan to produce 20 EVs by 2025.
The ID.4 GTX will be equipped with a more powerful powertrain According to reports, the crossover will be capable of reaching speeds up to 62 mph in just 6.2 seconds. This performance however will be limited to a range of less than The standard model has 250 miles . It will be available for sale in Europe in the spring, before making its debut in the spring. It is not yet known if this variant will be available in the United States.
The standard ID.4 is not too boxy but the ID.5 has a more sleek appearance. The coupe-inspired crossover uses the MEB platform. All signs indicate that the models will share the same powertrain options. They have a revised styling with an arching roofline that gives the model a more aerodynamic appearance.
VW has no plans to sell the ID.5 in America, but It’s a reality for Europeans. Although the reason behind this decision is not entirely clear, it is likely that the automaker is afraid there won’t be enough demand for two similar models.
The ID.4 is the first of VW’s new EV family to arrive in the United States. It will be available in America in the first quarter of 2021 after a slight delay. Standard equipment on the model is an 82-kilowatt hour battery. A rear-mounted motor produces 201 horsepower (150 megawatts) and 228 pounds-feet (309 nton-meters). An all-wheel-drive version is also available with 302 horsepower (225 kW).
The vehicle comes standard with an infotainment screen of 10.0-inch and the Statement package comes with a 12.0-inch screen. Safety suite features include forward collision warning with pedestrian monitoring and blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, and lane-keeping aid.
The ID.4 starts from $39,995, while the all-wheel drive model costs $43,695. VW’s electric vehicles still qualify for the $7.500 federal tax credit
