The Volkswagen ID.5 has been teased on numerous occasions. However, it will finally debut in September, though in a preproduction form. The ID.5 GTX concept has been teased by the Wolfsburg-based company. There’s much to see and hear.

The GTX suffix, which signifies that the concept is performance-oriented, has probably been noticed by many. VW has now adopted the GTX index as a successor for the GTI, GTD and GTE to express its “athleticism” in electric mobility.

The prototype is visually similar to the ID.4 GTX. This is especially true at the front, where the fascias look almost identical. The back is a completely different story due to the steep C-pillars and wide horizontal lines created by the LED taillights that have a 3D effect.

Two electric motors will power the ID.5 GTX concept. We expect it to produce around 295 horsepower (220kilowatts). This is the power output of the mechanically identical ID.4 GTX. In the case of the ID.5, a large lithium-ion batteries will provide a range of charges up to 309 miles (497 km) as measured by the WLTP cycle.

The new addition to VW’s ID line-up will offer a slightly longer range per charge than the ID.4 GTX (290 miles/480 km per WLTP). Both models use the same 77-kWh batteries, but VW states that the numbers could vary depending on the specifications.

Volkswagen claims it will release the production version the electric coupe-crossover design at some point next to the brand’s second production GTX model. The ID.4 GTX as well as the ID.5 GTX form part of Volkswagen’s ambitious plan for increasing the proportion of all-electric vehicles in its European sales to 70% by 2030.
