Volkswagen ID.X Electric Hot Hatch Confirmed for Production as ID.3 GTX

It could be released as early as next year.

Volkswagen revealed the ID.X earlier this year. It was a small performance hatchback with 329 horsepower (245kilowatts) as well as all-wheel drive. The possibility that VW would make the one-off production model was still up in the air. However, Ralf Brandstatter, VW CEO, confirmed this week to Auto Express that the ID.X would enter production. It will be known as the ID.3 GTX and could make its debut next year.

This will be the third performance offering by VW’s ID brand. It won’t likely get the same powerful powertrain as the concept. Volkswagen will instead install the dual-motor powertrain of the ID.4 GTX in the new ID.3 GTX. The powertrain in the ID.4 produces 295 horsepower (219 kW). Although it is a little less than the concept, it is still quite impressive. It should be able to reach speeds of 62 miles an hour (100 km per hour) faster than the heavier ID.4 GTX. In 5.3 seconds, the concept was able to sprint to 62.

Even with the dual-motor setup, the ID.X concept showed a significant weight loss. The ID.X concept was 200 kg (441 pounds) lighter that the standard production model. It’s unclear if this weight savings will be included in the ID.3 GTX production package. This would only improve its performance specs. The ID.X’s drift mode, which was a fun feature to design, might not be made it into production.

Brandstatter did not say when the ID.3 GTX will break cover. However, he noted that it would not happen anytime this year. It is possible that it will debut in 2022. However, this is speculation. It’s still exciting, despite the uncertain wait. The car is an all-wheel-drive, electric hatchback with nearly 300 horsepower. This sounds like a lot of fun and hints at a future VW Golf GTI.
