Volkswagen has unveiled a Polo mid-cycle facelift that will be made public at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show in March.

Although exterior changes aren’t much to be proud of, we notice a slightly revised front bumper and a grille with horizontal lines. While the shape of the headlights remains the same, the upper-spec models come with LED technology to provide the main beam function. The bumper at the back has been slightly revised to include a larger cutout for the license plate and updated taillights with different graphics.

The most significant modifications are found under the hood. Volkswagen has added three 1.4 liter 3-cylinder diesel engines with 74 bhp (55.5 kW), 89 (66 kW) or 104 (77 kW) respectively. These engines will replace the 90 bhp engine 1.2-liter and the 4-cylinder diesel engine 1.6-liter that was previously available with 89 bhp (66.6 kW) or 104 bhp (77.5 kW).

The frugal Polo TDI BlueMotion is powered by a 74 bhp diesel. It has a peak torque output of 155 lb/ft (1210 Nm) at 1,500 rpm. This model delivers 73.5 mpg US, 88.3 mpg UK (3.2 liters /100 km) in the combined cycle. CO2 emissions are 82 g/km. The 89-bhp version returns 69.2mpg US (83.1mpg UK, 3.4 liters/100 km) and 89g/km. This makes it 21 percent cheaper than the 1.6-liter model.

For the Polo TSI BlueMotion, a 1.0-liter 3-cylinder turbo engine with 89 bhp will be introduced by Volkswagen. It returns 57.3 mpg US (68.9 mpg UK) or 4.1 liters /100 km and 94 g/km. The base 1.2-liter, naturally-aspirated 3-cylinder with 59bhp (44.4 kW) has been upgraded and is now 21 per cent more efficient due to stop/start and brake energy recuperation. It is also available with 74 horsepower (55 kW), which makes it 5 BHP (4 kW) stronger than the previous version.

The GT variant packs 10 bhp (7.kW) more power, delivering 148 bhp (1110 kW) from the 4-cylinder 1.4-liter engine with cylinder on demand technology. The Polo GTI is a range-topping 4-cylinder 1.4-liter engine that delivers an additional 12 horsepower (9 kW), for a total grant of 189 bhp (141 kW).

The 2014 Volkswagen Polo is available with either a five- or six-speed manual transmission, depending on engine choice. There’s also a dual-clutch seven speed automatic transmission. There are 15 different sizes of alloy wheels available. The exterior paint options vary depending on the trim.

Inside, there is a new 3-spoke steering wheel and modified instrument graphics. The center console has new controls for the AC system. Rear view cameras are available on both the 5-inch and 6.5-inch touchscreen displays. The Polo facelifted features a new post collision braking system, city emergency brake function, and adaptive cruise control.

Soon after its Geneva debut in March, the 2014 Volkswagen Polo facelift will be available for purchase.
