Volkswagen Polo wins 2010 World Car of the Year Award

At the New York International Auto Show, the Volkswagen Polo was named the World Car of the Year 2010. To win the award, VW’s car defeated two other finalists, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and the Toyota Prius.

Originaly, 30 vehicles were nominated for this prize. The list was then reduced to the three finalists announced last month. A vehicle must be in production and have been sold on at least two continents in 2009 to be eligible for the award. To be eligible, each vehicle must have been produced at least 500 units in 2009.

A representative of the jury stated in a press release that the new Polo MkV “holds its own in the most competitive segment of the market,” The Polo, with its head-turning curves and classy design, is undoubtedly one of the most elegant small VWs ever made. The Polo is also extremely safe, earning a maximum five star Euro NCAP crash test rating. The Polo’s driving position is well-balanced and adjustable. It also has a mature attitude.

A jury of 59 automotive experts around the globe votes on the award. However, only one juror is from Africa or South America. They narrowed down the field to just ten people in January before choosing the finalist a month later. The VW Golf, Mazda2/Demio and Lexus LS460 were previous award winners.

The jury also awarded the Chevrolet Camaro the World Car Design of the Year prize and the entire Volkswagen BlueMotion range the World Green Car of the Year award. The jury didn’t reveal why they chose the BlueMotion Golf Passat, Polo, and Polo together, rather than choosing one vehicle.
