Volkswagen Tiguan R Under Consideration For US, Hybrid Not Happening

A hot Tiguan might be available, but it is not possible to get a hybrid.

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan will be available in the USA next year. It will come with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four cylinder engine that produces 184 horsepower (137kilowatts). The updated SUV will be available in Europe within a few weeks. It will come with a choice of the base Tiguan, the sporty TiguanR with 315 horsepower (234 kW), and the plug-in hybrid with 241 horsepower (180 kW). If we are lucky, one of these options may make its way to the USA in the near future.

Hein Schafer, Senior Vice President of Product marketing for Volkswagen told us in an interview the Tiguan R was still being considered for the US. The Tiguan won’t arrive in the States in 2021 so the company has plenty of time for deciding if a performance version is a good idea. The plug-in Tiguan hybrid, or a traditional Tiguan hybrid, are unlikely to be available in the US.

Schafer states, “I believe that our group hybrid tech is very good and very powerful.” However, it is not financially feasible. It doesn’t make financial sense to compare how much we would invest and how much you’d sell [in US ], There are no plans to make a plug-in hybrid, or a regular hybrid.

The standard Tiguan R is not available in the US. However, it sounds very appealing. The Tiguan is available in four trim levels: S, SE and SE R-Line. It also offers standard features such as standard LED headlights and digital instrument clusters. There are options for a 10.0-inch cluster and active safety equipment. We will have more information about the 2022 VW Tiguan as we get closer to the date of its on-sale. This could be late next year.
