It may not be available until 2024.
Volkswagen appears to be ready for a Tiguan makeover. New spy photos show a modified test mule, which suggests that the next-generation Tiguan will be equipped with an electric motor. For the 2018 model year, the Tiguan was available in North America.
Photos of a test mule sporting a modified body from the current-generation crossover are shown in these photos. The front is markedly different. A closed-off section covers the top grille opening. The front bumper is aggressive and sits over a revised lower grille opening. We believe this model is powered by a battery-electric motor because of the covered grille, beefy side skirts and lack of visible tailpipes at back.
Even though Volkswagen is offering more MEB-based electric vehicles, the Tiguan could still ride on the existing MQB platform. Volkswagen could offer the Tiguan with mild, plug-in, and fully electric powertrains on its old platform. As VW strives to become an all-electric automaker, the wide range of powertrain options would allow it to offer customers cheaper alternatives.
The development of the next-gen Tiguan is still in its early stages. Camouflaged models are not expected to be on the roads until next year. We could begin to see the new design at this stage. The new Tiguan will not be revealed by Volkswagen until 2024, before it is available for the 2025 model-year. Volkswagen will continue to offer the Tiguan in two lengths. North America will only have the long-wheelbase version.
Spy photos from April captured another Tiguan test mule, which was elongated and also has an electric motor. These test mules may be used by Volkswagen to develop electric vehicles. The current-generation Tiguan was introduced in 2016 and is now crowded by newer competitors. To keep it competitive, it needs to be overhauled and upgraded with new powertrains.
