In 2022, the electric successor to XC90 will be available.
In a press release, the Swedish automaker announced that the next-generation electric Volvo XC90 will be equipped with LiDAR technology and state-of-the art sensors. The next XC90 may continue to use the Recharge nomenclature as it did with the C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge .
Luminar developed the LiDAR safety-and-convenience tech. It stands for light detection, ranging, and ranging. Self-driving is now safer than ever thanks to the collaboration between the two companies. Volvo handles the hardware and Zenseact, Luminar, at the forefront, manages the software. NVIDIA, however, is responsible for the autonomous driving computer. Standard equipment includes the NVIDIA DIVE Orin system on a chip.
The new safety package for the Electric XC90 will reduce fatalities and accident rates, as well as improving on Volvo’s long-standing collision avoidance technology. Volvo is determined to be a leader in car safety. Volvo also envisions that the new safety package will “mature” over time. Improvements will come from over-the air updates. Volvo expects the vehicle to grow over time and will be more proactive in preventing collisions, saving lives.
Volvo expects to see lower insurance costs due to the new safety system. This is because accidents involving Volvo cars are unlikely to occur. All fully-electric Volvo cars come standard with a care package that includes insurance coverage. The Scandinavian automaker has made it clear that all its vehicles will be electric by the end this decade.
The flagship electric XC90 will include backup systems for key functions like steering and braking, in addition to LiDAR and AI computing. Once available, these systems will allow for autonomous driving unsupervised, also known as Highway Pilot. Further details will be available at the Volvo Cars Tech Moment, June 30, 2021. In 2022, the next-generation electric XC90 is expected to be unveiled.
