Volvo’s vice-president for large cars announced a series naming changes to upcoming models.
The second-generation XC90 is just a glimpse of what’s next in Volvo’s overhauled lineup. All models will receive replacements within three years. Dennis Nobelius is a Volvo vice president of the “Vehicle Line 90” model program. He announced several moniker changes, the most important being the next-gen S80, which will use the S90 designation.
The all-new V70 will now be renamed V90, while the next XC70 will be sold under the V90 Cross Country brandplate. Dennis also revealed plans for a long wheelbase S90, which will only be sold in China with the S90L denomination.
These models will all be powered by Volvo’s new four-cylinder Drive E engines. They will also ride on Scalable Product Architecture, which is nothing like Ford. Volvo claims that the S90, S90 L and V90 Cross Country models will be available within the next two-years.
