The R420 is not dead.
Volkswagen is still available if you are looking for a five-cylinder hot hatchback. At a recent event in Australia, Motor Magazine had the opportunity to meet with VW executives. The topic of an Audi-sourced five pot stuffed into a golf was brought up. Todd Ford, Volkswagen Australia Product Manager, answered the question with a non-committal maybe.
He reportedly stated that “sometimes we look at other power sources so that it’s great to have that drive to increase our market’s performance product, it is just the R division working to that,”. “Certainly, there aren’t any plans that we know of, but they certainly won’t be the only ones evaluating different drivetrains.”
After a pair recent sightings, this statement is made after the prototype Golf was seen lapping. Nurburgring . It had the same number plate that was found on an R420 test vehicle last year, a car we believed would be a road-going version.

Although it could be used as a test vehicle for other projects such as the VW project in Australia, Ford stated that they were talking with Wolfsburg about a better-performing Golf.
This one will be a challenge. The R is a fun machine. However, a five-cylinder soprano would be a good choice.
