VW Bus Drag Racing Beetle is The Ultimate Fish-Out of-Water Battle

These aren’t the Vee-dubs you see every day.

Although the classic Volkswagen Beetle is well-known for many things, racing is not one of them. Herbie may be disputed, but it is clear that the Beetle is a simple rear-engined car that you wouldn’t expect to see on a racetrack or drag strip.

Although we’ve seen a vintage Beetle and a Samurai compete in a drag race before it’s more of a fun event than a race for speed, this one was more for fun than anything.

Today’s race will see a Beetle taking on a VW Kombi, or Bus, in a drag race. The drag race is a battle of two vehicles that aren’t built for speed.

These two aren’t your average Vee-dubs. As you can see from the video above, they aren’t. Although they are tuned for drag strip, we don’t know the details of their aftermarket tuning. This explains the team’s determination to match up on the prepared surface.

This video is not just about drag racing between Beetles on steroids. This is actually a video of a Bug-In, which was filmed by YouTube’s Mike Garage.

Southern California Bug-In is a VW car show and drag race that combines with a swap meet. It’s held in Irwindale. This almost 40-minute-long video gives us a glimpse of these VW-focused events. It is a celebration for classic Volkswagens of all sizes.

Bug-In’s website reveals that the next event will be held on June 19, 2022. Entry to the car show is free. However, if you are going to the swap meet, it will cost $40. Drag racing entry is $60
