It needs to be redesigned.
Although vans might not be of much interest to hardcore car lovers, their uncompromising utility should not be overlooked. Volkswagen is aware of this and continues to build a new generation VW Caddy vans. The current model was introduced in 2003. It received facelifts in 2010 & 2015, but it still rides on old bones. This is not compatible with the Volkswagen of 2019.
The new Caddy will be riding on VW’s MBQ platform, which underpins many of its latest models. Spy photos of the Caddy in regular size show it, but there should be a Maxi version. However, Volkswagen is believed to have plans to incorporate the Caddy into its VW lineup, as the T7 Life Caddy. The T7 Multivan will get it, while the T7 Family will take over the Sharan.
VW has to the van’s original boxy proportions will be preserved, but the automaker has given it a modern look. With the classic closed grille, the front looks a lot more car-like. While the front gets reworked, the sliding doors are back. The square-shaped, small taillights have been replaced with units that seem to reach from the beltline up to the roof.
Moving the Caddy to VW’s MBQ platform for packaging and optimizing interior cargo will help improve efficiency, passenger space, and packaging. VW can also easily integrate alternative powertrains, such as a 48-volt mild hybrid system, into its vehicle. This should allow the van to meet increasingly stringent European emission standards.
The debut of the Volkswagen Caddy could be in the second half next year. It will then move to the first quarter 2021, before going on sale the following year. After the Caddy is released, Volkswagen will replace the Sharan by the T7 Family in the next year.
