VW Cross Golf SUV Spy Photos
The new Volkswagen Golf SUV, dubbed “Beduin”, is currently being tested in mule form. It uses the same naming strategy that the Touareg and was named after a Saharan Tribe. The new Golf will offer two gasoline and diesel engines, the 1.6 FSI and 2.0 TDI. The 2.8 V6 and the GTI’s 2.0 FSI Turbo, both with 200 hp, will be the range-topping models. DSG will also be an option. The 4×4 system will come courtesy of 4Motion, a VW Golf platform that uses components from both the Golf and the New Passat. The Beduin will be able to handle off-road conditions more effectively than the Golf Plus thanks to a 60mm suspension. The styling of the Beduin will look similar to the Golf Plus, but with some modifications. The smaller SUV has wider wheel arches and a more robust front and rear end. The headlights will look similar to the Passat’s and have a shield grill that was once larger. The Beduin is a serious off-road SUV that will compete with the Landrover Freelander, BMW X3 or Nissan X-Trail. The prices are not known at the moment, but they should be $5000 higher than the Golf Plus. Sales should start in late 2005/early 2006. In Europe, and possibly Canada, the Beduin will be available for purchase along with the new Golf in the US.
