We’re all in as long as they aren’t just a lame aesthetic package.
Volkswagen, like Hyundai with its N performance range, has been increasing its population. The Golf R and the I.D. are the most common examples of the “R” designation. The R electric race car made headlines for its record-breaking performance.
However, times are changing. The T-Roc R was launched last year and the Touareg R saw the light of day earlier in the year. The Tiguan R, Arteon R, and Mk8 Golf R are all set to launch in the near future.
If I’m right, there are already five R models available for the performance-driven Volkswagen shopper. The letter does come with a promise. Jurgen Stackmann, a VW Group board member, spoke with Top Gear to discuss the possibility of “more stories about R that will probably shock and amaze you” and suggested that there should be something special with the new R models.
VW has started the surprise. The Touareg R, the first R model to have a hybrid powertrain boasted a combined output 456 horsepower (340kilowatts). But that’s not all. Stackmann confirmed that future R models would be electric.
Stackmann stated that “the future of R must be, and will become, electric.”
With Volkswagen R chief Jost Capito convinced that electrification was “something that we want”, electrified performance vehicles from Wolfsburg shouldn’t come as a surprise. Let’s see if they are as amazing.
