VW Golf GTI Clubsport Duels Honda Civic Type R at Hockenheim

Spoiler Alert: This one is very close.

It’s not hard to see that hot hatchbacks are awash with options from every automaker. It all began with vehicles such as the Honda Civic TypeR and Volkswagen Golf GTI. It’s also convenient, Sport Auto’s newest video features feature a battle between two classics at Hockenheim’s race circuit.
We should mention before we begin that the Clubsport version of the GTI isn’t available in the U.S. The standard GTI has 242 horsepower (180kilowatts), while the Clubsport has 296hp (221kW). The video shows that the competitors are very close on paper.

Both vehicles are front-wheel driven and produce approximately 300 horsepower (223.7kW) from a turbocharged 4-cylinder motor. The only difference between the two examples is that the Honda has a manual gearbox, while the VW has dual-clutch auto.

It may not surprise then that the lap times of both cars were almost identical. The German car set 2 minutes 027, while the Japanese rival was a little slower at 2 hours 028. Honda fans may be disappointed but this speaks volumes about how a DSG gearbox makes a difference on a circuit as power-hungry as Hockenheim.
