This is the original Golf GTI.
Autocar was eager to find out if there would be a stronger S version, right on the heels of the Golf GTI Clubsport’s unveil. It’s not going to happen, at least not in near future. Karsten Schebsdat (head of driving dynamics), stated that the non-S variant will continue to be the best-selling front-wheel-drive Golf model, while a more powerful derivative is “not in the plans now.”
The new Golf GTI Clubsport has 296 horsepower (221 Kilowatts) as well as 295 pound-feet (405 Newton-meters), but it is still not the most powerful FWD Golf from Wolfsburg. The Golf Mk7-based GTI Clubsport S, which held the Nurburgring record for FWD models, had 306 horsepower. This was a far superior performance to the all-paw Golf R. However, this week’s Golf GTI Clubsport has an additional 15 lb-ft (20Nm) of torque than the S model.
Autocar It is speculated that VW’s decision not to make a more powerful front-driven Golf due to Dieselgate and disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic are the reasons for the decision. It is easy to see why Clubsport S is not high up on the priority list.
Is this a sign that VW won’t try to take down the Nurburgring record holder FWD cars? It is difficult to know, but VW would have to make a significant improvement on the 7:40.1 time set by the Renault Megane RS Trophy -R in May 2019. The Lynk & Co3 Cyan was even faster, completing a lap in 7:15. This vehicle is not considered a production car, as it was a concept.
The best news about the Golf lineup is yet to come as VW has yet not revealed the flagship R. spy photos also reveal that there will be a new wagon. The Golf R Variant will not be available in other countries than the Old Continent. It will most likely only be available in Europe.
