VW Golf GTI Clubsport S wins its Nurburgring record

If you don’t feel fast enough, return to the ‘Ring and make another attempt.

We would all love to set a lap record at Nurburgring. Not Volkswagen. Volkswagen.

The first record, was set in April by a Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S. It took 7 minutes 49.21 seconds. VW broke that record six months later and ran a lap of the track in 7 minutes, 47.19 seconds. VW claimed that the record was broken in perfect 8degC (46degF conditions) on October 26, which VW stated were ideal for maintaining the car’s engine health and tires at their best.

This time places the GTI Clubsport S in good company. It is faster than the 7 minutes and 58 second lap time of a BMW M2. The Honda Civic Type R was perhaps the most comparable competitor to Clubsport, taking a leisurely 7 mins and 50.63 seconds, to lap the Ring.

VW Golf GTI Clubsport S wins its Nurburgring record

How fast can a VW hatchback lap the famous race track? The ClubsportS is not your average GTI. The car is based on the existing GTI Clubsport with 265 horsepower. However, it has a lighter weighting regiment and more power. The turbo-four 2.0-liter engine produces 310 horsepower. The back seats were removed and an aluminum frame was installed. A pair of lightweight race seats are bolted up to the front. This, along with other tricks, reduces the Clubsport S’s curb weight by approximately 66 pounds. Nineteen inch wheels are equipped with Michelin Sport Cup 2 tires. A special “Nurburgring” mode in the driving profile selector adjusts both the suspension and engine to ensure the car is ready for the challenge of the track.

Unfortunately, this car is not easy to find. Only 400 Golf GTI Clubsport S were produced by Volkswagen. Germany was the only recipient of 100 copies. The car was long-sold in the U.K.
